JAGUAR XJ: YAY OR NAY?
Jaguar XJ: yay or nay?

The new Jaguar XJ: it’s an absolute cracker. I’ve not driven one yet, and might not for some time, but I love the thing. In pictures it looks brilliant, in the metal simply sensational.

It’s caused quite some controversy already, of course, wildly departing from the XJ’s classic styling and veering off in the direction the XF should have taken. It’s a bold move for a company abundant with elegant classics and past glories, but it’s one well worth applauding.

Browse these pictures and tell me I’m wrong.

The XJ fascinates me, too. It’s not an evo car in the traditional sense, no matter how good it is to drive, but it’s definitely a petrolhead’s car. Stuffed full of tech (the TFT dials have to be seen to be believed) and weighing less than an equivalent (and smaller) XF, engineering love has been poured into it generously.

And curiously, my intrigue towards the new XJ has reawakened my need for a previous-gen car. Suddenly my commute is filled with late ‘90s/early ‘00s XJs, one in particular in ideal spec: a stealthy black XJR. In contemporary magazine twin tests I always rooted for that, not the E39 M5, and despite the doubtless catastrophic running costs, an XJR remains an itch I need to scratch. Anyone with me on this one?

As much as I love my 2000 Supercharged VDP, I am blown away by the new XJ. I've had a chance to see it a few times and was able to drive it the last time. It is amazingly impressive in real life. All the shots that make it look awkward are smashed in real life. Everything works to the eye and hand perfectly. Having seen it next to a Bentley, it comes across as lower and much more beautiful with the same interior quality in long wheel base form. In drive, it is a big XK. That's how good the steering is. Jaguar has made the base XJ as fast as the last XJR and made it out drive it. The XJL is now like a old Super V8. This is amazing content. It only goes up from there with 470hp and 510hp available. Look at the price point comparied to a S550 with simliar equipment, or a 7 series. How about a Maser Q? All the performance est. Jag gives are crap. The cars are going to be rockets The XJ will rock the luxury car world harder than anyone can imagine. Watch out Germany/Italy/and Japan

I think the new XJ looks the mut's from the front, for a car in this category, shame they didn't do an equally good job with the XF and the disappointing lights. The XJ back end though...80's yank tank is what comes to mind, 'orrible, what were they thinking!

Sorry, Stephen, but try as I might, I cannot take to the new XJ. Some aspects are good, but there are too many negatives - it looks like so many other cars, apart from the badge - that awful 'rear end' - the price? I am not surprised that it has awakened your interest in the last of the classic Jaguars! I have a 2008 model year 'final upgrade' XJR, and I would not think of paying circa £60,000, plus my car, for the new short wheelbase Super V8 model. I am honestly not sure as to what you are referring with respects to the 'catastrophic running costs'. My car does nearly 30 miles to the gallon - the servicing costs are very reasonable - and it has given no problems - neither will it corrode like steel cars. If you want one of the last XJR series, buy it now - while you can!! They are an amazing machine!

It's certainly quite a radical departure in terms of shape/form from the wide low slung previous XJ. And I'm a fan of the XF shape (hard not to after the dogs-dinner that was the S-Type) which the new XJ is following. But the rear and interior wrankles as just looks too dated and Rover-esque which is a big contrast to the patently modern theme going on everywhere else! But I'm still reserving judgement because I've yet to see one in the flesh and all its glory.

Previous gen XJR in black is uber cool in my book.

Yep totally with you on the XJR thing. I'm lusting after an all-aluminium black XJR (2002-2006), they're a solid used buy. With it being quintessentially British and an image of a car that the Kray twins would drive whilst carrying out extortion duties, I've always been slightly biased.

I am, predictably, entirely with you on this one. The old XJ with the black grill, slightly lower suspension and black anodeised wheels and black chrome, beautifully evil! Hang the expense, you only live once! RH
