Lambo SV - best noise ever?

Neeeeeeeeeoooooooooowwwwwwwww! That’s roughly the noise the Lamborghini Murcielago SV made as it thundered past me during Car of the Year in October.

I’ll set the scene: we were driving in convoy from Glen Coe to the Isle of Skye, transporting 13 performance cars from a day’s photography to a night of steak and slightly odd-tasting ale at our hotel. I was in the Mazda MX-5, roof down, close to the end of the pack as cars boasting three times the power of the diddy roadster careered off.

And then I caught a bright orange glimpse in the rear view mirror. It’s a hue that belonged to just one of our eCoty contenders, the utterly barmy Murcielago LP670-4. Piloting it was Ollie Marriage, and ahead of us stood national speed limit signs signaling the end of a 30mph zone.

Only one thing for me to do: slow down and allow Ollie to gun it. Cue the best noise of any car on sale today and one of my defining eCoty moments, the Scottish mountains allowing the Murcie’s third-gear scream to ricochet around and hang in the air, disturbing the peace of the Scottish Highlands but making me grin like a six-year-old schoolboy.

And that’s what the SV is all about. That it did rather well at eCoty (Chris Harris’s video explains) is besides the point, the LP670’s raison d’etre is its orange paint, silly doors, huge wing and that hair on the back of the neck exhaust note.

Is it the best noise on sale now? Or indeed, ever? Can you think of anything to top it?

I'm with Mark34bn on this one, the McLaren F1 would be my choice. However, the LP670 SV does come very close to it - the noise sounds simply amazing.

My vote goes to the Mclaren F1, depends what kind of engine floats your boat but that 6.1 V12 makes a fantastic noise.

I love the Griff V8, but a Mk2 GT40 7-litre V8 is better. I prefer a V12, and an SV is probably as good as it gets, other than perhaps one fitted with a Tubi? otherwise an old carb flat-12 Ferrari lump. However the ultimate spine tingler is the peripheral ported 4-rotor Mazda 787b '91 Le Mans winner. Awesome!

Ford BDA anyone? What a noise. Also, Ferrari's last V12 F1 engine - not a road car but it was an amazing, atmosphere-frothing sound.

TVR is a good shout. Every one of them makes a tremendous noise, the Cerbera/Griffith era especially. Seeing a TVR approach always prompts me to mute the stereo and wind down the window.

After working for a TVR garage in Essex for many years from the age of 14 it has to be the griffith engine! didn't matter how many times I heard that engine it would always stick a grin on my face! what a noise! but then very little sounded bad in that garage! the speed six was pretty special too!

Impreza flat four turbos are so passe these days. Although the STI Spec C has a certain manic charm to it, although limited burble. BRM V16? There is the infamous recording of a testing session which you can find on Youtube with ease, must be up there as one of the best car sound recordings ever, if not the best engine noise available today. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wRSYTw9IBxg If that doesn't make the hairs on the back of your neck stand up, then you are officially dead. Makes a Murkylager sound a bit boring. And besides, any debate like this, that link was bound to be posted by someone...

I'm with Stephen on this one - nothing at eCotY this year came close to making a better noise than the LP670. I'd only been driving the LP670 for a few miles when we treated the MX-5 to the V12 flypast, and I remember saying to Langy at the time that this is something Stephen wouldn't forget in a hurry. Like D_Heathcote and Al, I'm usually more of a V8 man, but this V12 has to be the most addictive engine I've ever used.

I'm a bigger fan of a V8 opposed to the V12 in the SV, I prefer the AMV8 to this. Having said that I do like the sound of the Porsche GT3, sounds great to my ears.

Most memorable for me was a TVR Griffith starting up in an underground car park. I usually wind a window down if there's a TVR nearby.

Nothing beats my 1999 Subaru Impreza Turbo with full stainless steel exhaust Stephen. Thats a noise that can loosen fillings and you feel it in your stomach everytime you press the loud pedal. As the passenger of Mr Ollie Marriage at the time we passed you it was an amazing din but I still didn't get the rumble in the gut. It comes a close second though! Are you sure it wasn't me screaming like a little girl that you heard?
