I've got some $$, finally. I've got approximately £10k to splash, ideally i'd like a manual, rwd, less than 60k miles and something rated as being pretty decent. IS it really just E39 M5, E39 M5, E39 M5???

ok - quick correction - the 328i feels / seems faster and torquier. Fat old bloater that the newer model is!! ;) - 28 Feb 12 @ 04:44:27 by RAGE79
Strong response mate i like it. My best mate's dad was a director of chassis and engineering at Jag which ruled them out based on what he said it took to keep them going, all the rest are eminently valid suggestions although i did want manual which ruled out the mercs and i felt a big V8 would be quite comedy before fuel prices hit £2 a litre!.
In the end living in Hammersmith meant the insurance was astronomical so i've gone for a stop gap of a '03 plate 330ci facelift model which will be trashed remorselessly up the A12 and back and round the occasional track until the end of the summer. Then its C4S time. Although based on the latest edition 168 i might go nuts with some finance and go for a R8 or a GTR.
You only live once right?!
Hows the 350z going? I pick up the 330ci tomorrow night from some ropey old car trader in Bromley, am slightly concerned that it'll be a money pit but thats half the anticipation right?
Random observation for you. My current car is a 328i coupe. 193bhp. The 330ci 221 bhp feels in completely un-scientific back to back drives to be faster!
Wonder if evo would figure them both to find out?! ;) - 28 Feb 12 @ 04:40:29 by RAGE79
E46 M3, Merc C32 AMG, Merc E55 AMG, Nissan 350Z, Jaguar XKR Mk1, Jaguar S-Type R, to name but a few... RAGE79, I suspect you simply WANT an E39 M5 and aren't really trying. - 17 Jan 12 @ 01:14:05 by SamS
Read no further if it's a sallon you want :D
350Z!!! thats what i did.
Such an entertaining car, great sounding engine and very composed in the corners. it is very masculine, big heavy gearbox and nicely weighted steering. the bridgestone RE040s on the earlier models are not great though, i swapped mine out for some michelin PS3s. they really changed the way the car drives and i have to have my suicidal maniac hat on to get the car to break traction. that said, the traction control is crap and gets turned off normally before my seatbelt is on.
There are plenty about so you can pick a decent one. check out 350z-uk.com. very helpful and friendly people on there.
Also you can get a nice S2k or RX8 for that money, or even less. i tested the RX8 and allthough it was very nice and composed and had a nicer interior, i couldnt ignore the brutish charm of the Zs V6 and seat of the pants feel.
You could also get a boxter or Z4 for that money, but not a range topper.
MR2s are meant to be a giggle aswell but i have never looked into them.
There are plenty of performance cars around for that money. you amy just find yourself weighing up between age/quality/price/performance.
i know im biased but i had a 9k budget earlier this year and after lots of searching my conclusion was that for the best bang for buck on a new(ish) car for that price was a the rx8 s2k or 350z. and no, im not a japanese car salesmen ;)
Good luck hunting!!! - 18 Oct 11 @ 02:32:59 by 350Chris
Comfort and pace - Mecredes CL55? Better looking, more comfortable and will leave an M5 standing in a race (until you involve corners).
All out attack - Evo 8/9? Impreza P1?
Practicality - Audi S4 Avant?
Something newer - lots of fun to be had in a Focus ST Mountune or VXR Astra?
The world is your oyster with 10K. - 14 Oct 11 @ 04:41:02 by mike-RS
Any of the classic bubble-era Japanese sports cars could be yours for £10k - Supra, Skyline, 300ZX, RX-7 ?
More recently, the earlier 350Z's are down to 10k too. Going back to German, don't overlook the Porsche 968. I'd be looking at BMW M-coupes (Z3 & Z4) too, unless you need four doors ? - 21 Sep 11 @ 11:55:29 by Samoht
