AM I EVO ENOUGH?

Bought my first car last week, no longer sharing with the parents, but had to keep my feet on the ground as motoring costs for a 19 year old student lad aren't modest. I've got a pucker mk1 Ford Ka 3, not a sporty car by a long stretch but it was always lauded for agile, chuckable handling, light weight, plenty of feel through the steering and generally being a much better handling car than it could have got away with. Short gearing, snickety change action and about 50bhp all add up to a hell of a lot of grass roots driving fun.

Just wondering, is this in any way the bottom rung on the evo car ladder, since it's so good to drive, or do you all reckon it's just a shopping cart?

A solid start I'd say. Trying to get something with reasonable insurance when starting out is no mean feat. Have fun, enjoy it, and stay safe :)

A Golf would've been on the shortlist if it'd been within budget but the car and insurance had to come all in for less than £2k so no indulgences yet. Have to say I'm a Ford man though, I reckon due to my first ever car ride (home from hospital aged 4 days) in an XR3i! Kudos to my Dad for that one. Hopefully in a few years I'll graduate to a Puma or Fiesta, or, yes, a Golf..

Congrats on your first, I just got mine too, insurance had put me off for so long but there is no other choice for me (3k). With regards to it being an evo car, I think you can be excused as it is a first car! Although I like to think my mk4 golf is more evo-worthy :P

Congrats on the purchase. The pushrod four on those have lots of old-style torque, coupled with a Parry-Jones chassis makes a good combo. Don't worry about whether you are Evo enough, it's not an exclusive gentleman's club where you have to show your car keys to the bouncer at the door for approval. Evo = the thrill of driving, if you enjoy driving then you have as much of place among the readership as the next person. Also, bear in mind that budget is not the only factor in opportunities to enjoy driving; better a Ford in (say) North Wales than a Lamborghini in central London.

Probably one of the more 'evo' small cars that's reasonable for a young driver to insure. I'm 18 and thinking of buying my first car in the next 6 months or so, the Ka would probably be top of my list. Have fun and drive safely!
