Being the editor of evo has its perks. And yes, that is an understatement. I don't tend to make the most of them, if I'm honest. Being editor I'm predominantly office-based - dealing with the industry, crafting the mag with the team, HR stuff, budgets etc. etc. I'm not complaining - but I do tend to get jealous when I send some of the other team on the glamourous tests. 'That should be me!' I whisper to myself as another budget spreadsheet gets placed on my desk...

Not this time, however. When the invite came through to drive the Bugatti Veyron Grand Sport Vitesse I locked it away in a lead box, protected by a cougar.

And what an extraordinary car it is. Of course, the engine dominates - but the car is extremely driveable. Docile in traffic, and demonic on the open road - it really is a colossal automotive achievement.

We didn't have much time to put together the video - less than a couple of hours in fact. But kodus to evo Filmmaker Sam Riley who captured the essence of the car.

Hope you don't find my final comment conceited. Whenever I get to drive these awesome cars I wish I could physically share it with evo readers - sometimes words, or video, are not enough.

Anyway, enough of that - turn up your speakers and enjoy!

..and lets not forget this is more than a big VW with respected guru's like Loris Bicocchi being involved in it's development. Great car and a nice video, thankyou for sharing it with us. I have yet to see a Veyron in the flesh and doubt I will ever experience one first hand.. so if this is the closet I will get...then keep 'em coming Evo!

Every time I stand beside a Veyron I can't help to be drawn to it. It just makes me smile :). Regardless of the statistics, it has a definite halo above it.

You were directing that last comment directly at me, weren't you Nick? Make it happen! I HAVE to get a ride and drive in that car. By the way, plans are afoot to get Godzilla 2 up a few notches in power and handling. I would die a happy man if we could get the two cars together at Bruntingthorpe at some point...

Love it or hate it, the Veyron is an immense engineering achievement for the VW group and is a landmark in the history of car design and engineering. There is more to the Veyron than just a game of Top Trumps. The fit and finish is something else, high-end Audi/Bentley standard if not better. Then there is how the car behaves under normal conditions. Something that can hit 200mph on public roads with ease is as docile around town as Golf or A4. Despite the price, any car that is this fast but this easy to use is still a massive achievement. The sheer lack of compromise is what makes this car special for me. And its modest proportions. You're a lucky chap Nick and I can appreciate why you pulled rank on this one. Even just a passenger ride in a Veyron has got to be a tick in a box on any petrol-head's wish list. Preferably on de-restricted Autobahn where people understand lane discipline.
