A car allows you to travel almost anywhere you want, whenever you want, which is a luxury that we sometimes don’t appreciate enough. Namely, we often presume that as long as we don’t run out of petrol, we’ll get to our destination without any problems. Of course, many of us can testify that that’s not the case. Namely, every car needs to be maintained properly and regularly, so that it remain reliable and safe.

With modern cars now getting increasingly sophisticated, the task of keeping them in shape is at the same time more challenging and simpler. Many drivers used to be able to repair most of the malfunctions themselves a few decades ago, but now that’s not so easy. At the same time, it used to take a lot of time to diagnose a problem sometimes, while now you simply hook the car to a computer and voila! That’s why it’s important to know how to look after your car and we’ve prepared five tips that should help you with that.

Manual is your friend

Each car comes with a manufacturer’s manual that you should follow closely if you wish to prolong the life of your car and save money on repairs. It makes perfect sense that those who built the car know best what kind of care is needed. Even if you had experience with similar models before, it doesn’t necessarily mean that it would be applicable to your current car.

Sometimes the same symptoms require different approach and solution, depending of the brand, so make sure you don’t trust some random “garage expert”, who might suggest something that is not in the manual. If you follow the official manual when it comes of servicing, changing oil and filters and other steps, you shouldn’t have any major, unexpected problems with your car.

Under the hood

Probably the most important parts of any car are located under the hood. There is the engine, fluids, battery, belts and other vital elements that require your attention. Having those elements regularly inspected will allow you to detect any problems. Check your oil levels and replace it according to the advice in the manual and the same goes for the oil-, air- and fuel-filter, as well as spark plugs and spark plug wires.

If you don’t know how to do it yourself or don’t have time to take your car to a garage, you can always call a reliable mechanic, who can come to your home and inspect your vehicle. The important thing is not to neglect what’s under the hood.

Professional service

Each manufacturer recommends that you take your car to licensed, professional mechanics. You need to know where the closest recommended mechanic is located before any emergency that might occur. If there are several of them, ask around or look for online reviews to find the most trustworthy one. Never accept any suggestion which includes installing non-original, cheaper parts, since that would definitely affect the reliability of your vehicle.

Heating and air-conditioning

One of the most important features of every car is its heating and air-conditioning system. Since heating and cooling systems share some parts, you’ll have them running all year round, which means you need to inspect them regularly. Apart from scheduled inspections, you need to take your car to an expert in case you detect any malfunction in either heating or cooling.

Although you may not find this very important, it actually is. Your car should be cleaned and washed on a regular basis. This includes removing any food wrappings, sand, mud and dust from the floor and seats, as well as any bird droppings, since they damage the bodywork and definitely not look nice.

So, if you’re a careful driver and follow these tips, you’ll be much more likely to enjoy all the benefits and fun provided by having a reliable car. As long as you remember that you need to keep it in shape, your car will be able to serve you very well for many years.
