All the best meetings take place in the pub. My friend Clive and I were sitting in one, called The Leaping Goose or something, the day after boxing day, and after all sorts of other chat Clive said ‘What are you doing for New Year?’

‘Not the foggiest. I’ll probably turn-in early and finish that book I’ve had on the go.’

‘Let’s go on a road trip’

‘Tell me more’

‘Err, Wales?’

‘Nice, but I spend half my life there.’

‘How about going to the snow? Let’s bung the skis and board in a car and go to Meribel’

‘Alright. Sold.’

‘I’ll sort the accommodation, you sort transport’

And so it was that about 36 hours later we found ourselves on a ferry (Eurotunnel was completely full) with a Cayenne Hybrid, some Christmas chocolate and a road trip ahead of us. What larks.

Anyway, I also happened to have the office GoPro video camera with me and inspired by Joycey’s efforts which I’d seen on here, I decided to film the trip. When it came to editing what I’d shot I realised that most of it wasn’t very interesting so I thought that I would try and cram the whole thing into 120 seconds. Thus the ‘Two Minute Road Trip’ was born.

So, what I’m going to suggest is that anyone going on a road trip this year has a go. You don’t need any fancy equipment and if you’ve got a Mac then editing in iMovie is a doddle. Post it on here and everyone’s a winner (that doesn’t mean there are prizes, I’m afraid. Film making is it’s own reward – just ask anyone living in a fifteen bedroom house in Hollywood). Give it a go and we’ll publicise the best ones.

For anyone interested in the Cayenne’s figures, I did note them down on the journey back:

582miles

26.9mpg

53.4mph

11hr3min total journey time, of which 3hrs 2mins 20secs was on zero emissions – ie with the engine shut down

I watched Henry's video when it was first posted and thought it was a great idea. Woke up early last Sunday to the first nice day in ages, so decided to have a crack at it myself. Unfortunately I have a cheap camera, wobbly tripod and shakey hands, as can be seen in the vid, but I enjoyed making it. I ordered a suction holder for the camera on yesterday and hoping it will arrive before the weekend because I am going to an Alfa owner's meet in a part of the country with nice driving routes and scenery. In 2006, i had been driving for only 3 months, and i was talking about the world cup with 2 buddies, and we realised we all had a few days free around the england sweden match in Cologne. Down the pub to watch the game, nah, better idea...Ferry booked online, set off with tent in boot of my mk3 tdi golf 72 hours later. picked up a map at a german motorway services and picked a campsite outside the city. 3 days and a truly electric atmosphere later, drove home. great spontaneous road trip. no in car footage, but the vid sums up what it was all about. Beat 26.9mpg too, lol. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3P88-DqvAPY

Almost forgot about this: from my roadtrip across Spain http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=crVsn0ZiIog . Pitty I had to do it in a Peugeot 207 :-/

I used my time lapse app on my iPhone to make a little roadtrip movie of my journey to university from Huddersfield to Oldham over the Pennines. I only quickly put this together but it gives an idea of the fun we have driving through clouds each morning..! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1UwrPhLEeoU ..... I'm hopefully going to make a better one this weekend as I drive the 300 miles south for a weekend at home!

Really like the videos that PeteSX and nezzarine have posted - well worth a look. Velocity; I haven't noticed much ignoring of red traffic lights at night, but I don't do much driving near traffic lights at night...! Chris_71, the GoPro can be bought with a suction mount which is pretty good although the way it adjusts is a bit fiddly. I think that the ContourHD comes with a good suction mount too. It's always advisable to use a bit of gaffer tape as back-up, but as the cameras are so light you don't need big rigs like photographers.

Chris_71 at 10:02 AM January 28, 2011

Can I ask a rather un-Evo question here! How easy was it to mount the camera? I know photographers spend huge amounts on suction mounts for high-quality stills, but can you get something affordable for this sort of thing?

nezzarine at 8:57 PM January 27, 2011

Henry I did something similar a couple of years ago when I was in Tokyo... http://www.youtube.com/user/nezzarine I've also uploaded it on my profile.

Henry, the regen' braking is as you say still using the energy from that yummy hi-powered liquid (petrol) that got you up to speed. It's clever tek for sure and i'm not knocking storing kinetic energy, it's just not clever enough to be 'zero' emissions because nothing in the Universe that moves is a free lunch. Don't let the hed-fuk 'in' regards wasting petrol at tickover at traffic lights either. The Govts proliferation of these retarded lollipop boxes is the real waster of our time and energy, blame that entirely. On the topic I thought i was the only one driving through red light road blocks (when safe to do so) but in Rome, at night, quite a few have cottoned on to breaking the Govts nanny 'reds' (mainly Smart cars). Here in Spain everyone's started moving through reds early going on the pedestrian lights turning instead. Noticed any early movement there among UK motorists? Society's pushing back against inane Govt rules, maybe a few years we'll get our roads clear and unclogged

HenryCatchpole at 11:11 AM January 26, 2011

Hi Velocity, I might have got this wrong, but I think that at least some of the energy in the battery should be recharging from regenerative braking, in which case it is more like zero emissions. I know that the car had to use fuel to get up to speed in order to brake, but I think it's at least a bit closer to a free lunch. It's also weird how used you get to stop/start - when you get out of a car that has it, into a car that doesn't have it and you sit in traffic with the engine running it suddenly feels quite wasteful. Doesn't mean I'm not going to try and use a Lambo for the next road trip though!

Velocity at 6:48 PM January 25, 2011

Great 'drop of the hat' inspiration for a roadtrip Henry. We never really lose our youthful zest for life we kill it ourselves getting all bogged down in our day-to-day. So brill you're still smelling like teen spirit. One spanner in the works however, there's no such thing as a free lunch and there's also nothing real about 'zero emissions' either. The stored energy in the battery came from transfer of the emitting exploding petrol whichever way you slice (or spin!) the energy budget. So here's to cutting the green BS and going on another Bullrun emitting whatever we friggin well like coz its our energy afterall

HenryCatchpole at 5:39 PM January 25, 2011

Glad that you all like the video and the idea. Thank you. I think the zero emissions figure of the Cayenne is hugely impressive (those three hours didn't include the ferry journey, bad_roo), although admittedly the mpg is nothing to write home about. The transition between engine on and engine off was extremely smooth (spookily so) when you were up to cruising speed, but pulling away from junctions or toll booths it seemed to make a bit of a meal of things which was frustrating. On the road up to Meribel you really needed to select Sport and then shift gear manually to make sure you got enough out of the engine but the chassis is still very impressive for a 4x4 when you put it into Sport mode.

Brilliant Henry, makes me want to go right NOW! Nicely filmed, nice ski skills but not sure about those 1990 cricket spec sunglasses. Really hope people take note and start posting some of their own vids on here.

PAFC OK at 9:41 AM January 25, 2011

Great little film, though some seriously dubious headwear from time to time! Expect many 'efforts' from the rest of us. (Films that is, not dubious headwear.)

Marv at 10:14 PM January 24, 2011

Good idea, nice vid and some cool snowboarding skillz there Henry!

bad_roo at 8:58 PM January 24, 2011

"That's an inpressive figure". I assume most of that was the ferry crossing?

Frank SF at 7:57 PM January 24, 2011

your movie is nice and interesting. any more detailed opinions about Cayenne hybrid? it is true it works in a jerky, unfinished way? Someone characterized it as being a "Beta".

MaxLambo at 7:51 PM January 24, 2011

Great video Henry! I am inspired to start making some of my own. I like the bit shot from the dash, gave me a chuckle. How did you feel about the Cayenne S Hybrid as a long distance-drivers car? Cayenne's have always appealed to me, as a solution to the fun vs. practicality problem. I am an avid Skier and have a big dog. So in order to satisfy my love for driving and need of 4wd and space, I own 2 cars, but I would like to just have one that can fulfill both needs. However tempting the Cayenne Turbo S is to me, I can't afford the 6 figure price tag or dreadful fuel economy. So is the Hybrid Cayenne up to the task of fulfilling both roles?

PeteSX at 4:54 PM January 24, 2011

Nice vid Henry. If I may share my 2:40 long video of my first roadtrip to Nordschleife I did 3 years ago. I think it was only my 2nd video I ever edited, so pls bear that in mind :) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wOp8Sm4MDvc

Duisberg at 3:47 PM January 24, 2011

Great story. 26.9 MPG though ? That is pants.

RichardMajor86 at 3:40 PM January 24, 2011

"11hr3min total journey time, of which 3hrs 2mins 20secs was on zero emissions – ie with the engine shut down" - Thats an impressive figure. This is what i want to see from green-efforts in the close future, more stop start, hybrid stuff.
