It’s an unforgettable moment when the Octavia rolls out of the trailer and onto the salt for the first time. Skoda’s aren’t sold in the US, but the stunning livery and super-cool Moon discs on the wheels make it look like it was born for Bonneville.

It raises a few quizzical eyebrows, but Speed Week people are knowledgeable, so it’s not long before we’re chatting to people and making friends.

The pit lane stretches for approximately three miles along the edge of the long course, so we all get the perfect view of the action. The mix of machinery is remarkable, with roadsters, lakesters, streamliners and more production-based cars all thrown in together.
