DICKIE MEADEN: THIS IS WHAT I'VE GOT MYSELF INTO

Last week I got you guessing why I might need a super-protective fire suit and a parachute. Many of you suggested I might be going drag racing (a reasonable assumption given the kit), while others reckoned I was merely taking sensible precautions prior to a hot lap passenger ride alongside Roger 'Fireball' Green.

A few of you also said Bonneville Salt Flats. If you were amongst them then well done, your guess was correct.

Come mid-August I'll be in Utah, competing in what I believe to be one of the greatest motorsport events on Earth. Much like Pikes Peak (another passion of mine), Bonneville Speed Week is part racing, part tribal gathering. I'm sure the other teams and drivers will be as fascinating as the breathtaking array of cars and bikes entered, and I'm itching to experience what I suspect is the purest and most addictive motorsport there is. Bonneville veterans call it 'Salt Fever' and I really can't wait to catch it.

I could tell you what car I'm driving, but I like to keep you lot guessing so I'll give you a few hints, post a few pictures and leave you to it for a few days. Suffice to say it's not an obvious choice of car, nor is it what you'd expect from the manufacturer in question. In a way that's why it's going to be great fun and a real adventure, both for me as a driver and the guys charged with building and running the car. It sure is a great way to celebrate the 10th anniversary of your performance brand...

I'll post another blog on Wednesday June 8th where all will be revealed. Until then check the images below and get guessing!

All superfluous hardware and trim has been stripped from the car. It makes quite a pile!

Here's the interior, complete with immensely strong roll cage and skeletal Kirkey seat. Note torso-protecting 'wings'

If you're an engine spotter then this is probably a bit of a giveaway. Hoping the monster turbo should puff enough for 500-600bhp...

Glad to hear the SCTA guys are involved, they tend to be a bit put out if u show up with a car they don't know about... but similarly are fabulously helpful and stop you making errors that mean loads of work to pass tech. You'll find everyone will be supportive, it's a fantastic group. Guessing it was Lee or Kiwi Steve that came over? Best think of Salt as wet tarmac... that's the closest, but it's still different! Do you know what record you'll be running on? I'm in the SuperTourer on the hill at Goodwood all 3 days if you are around then? We def. need to have a good chat so you can learn from a few of my rookie mistakes! Cheers

As ever time has been the issue. Skoda also wants to try and keep the car close to production wherever possible. You're right on the fuelling: the boys at Revo are working hard with mapping etc, but there won't be any fancy intake system, so this is likely to be the limiting factor. However big power is possible from these engines without masses of work, so we're hopeful of putting on a good show. Quite what it'll be like guiding a 550+bhp front-drive car on salt - which I'm told is slippery and quite unlike any other surface - is anyone's guess. The whole crew has a lot to learn, but the people at Bonneville are being very helpful, so we won't lack support, advice and good wishes.

Fantastic project - really captures the imagination, good luck with it Dickie. I'd guess the big turbo is the easy part and fuelling is the real issue. Are we going to see a carbon fibre plenum ,1000cc injectors, giant throttle body etc?

Hi Rick, wondered if you'd be back this year. The Skoda tech guys got the chief scrutineer from SCTA to UK look at car, so we should be in good hands. All at Bonneville have been incredibly supportive of the project. Can't wait to get there. I'm sure it'll be a huge challenge to get everything running sweetly, but as you know that's all part of the adventure. See you out there if not before.

Cripes, week behind, just commented on the blog! Glad to hear you'll be joining us on the Salt! Dickie, if you want to chat beforehand about the whole schebang drop me a line? Think you're going to be running on a pretty serious record, H/BGT? Traction and aero will be mega important... let me know who is advising on the build of the car from the SCTA? Cheers Rick

What are you going to do with the superfluous hardware? I always wanted the Sat Nav for my vRS

Ben__B at 6:19 PM June 4, 2011

I think the seat gives it away

Stig at 2:48 PM June 4, 2011

Easy, Octavia VRS as said above.
