Hello fellow geeks - I seek advice. Currently in the dining room I have decent older laptop which is great for working on / watching the news but its only got 4gb ram - the speakers are shite and it doesnt have bluetooth to connect to my soundlink either. Anyway I want to replace it with something new and better. All in one pcs - look good and have touchscreens - and I can use it as a tv too? Any pointers? Big Laptops - no idea whats available for about a grand - will it have decent sound? Mac - can't alter screen angle from what i saw which may make it useless as tv? Also Windows 8 - best to avoid or not?

Depends if you need portability or not. A grand will get you a pretty powerful desktop PC that will blow any laptop into the weeds at that price-point. Windows 8. Ewww... Avoid.

iMac screen angle is adjustable, current screens don't have huge reflection problems either. I mean, it's a plate of glass but the antireflective coating ain't bad. TV Tuning ability requires TV Tuner card - loads of DVB adaptoids available on either platform. Windows 8 would probably make more sense on a touchscreen PC but soon gets really grating when you just want to get some work done. It's really starting to get on my tits at work, frankly, and I was pretty open to it if I'm honest.

It is gimmicky, and it's physically a bad idea to use a touchscreen on an upright screen. Doesn't do your shoulders any good. Touchscreen on phones/tablets? Yes. Touchscreen on desktop computers/monitors? Don't be so fvcking stupid, it's a recipe for RSI and back pain, and why manufacturers actually make these things I have absolutely no idea.

I agree as it's even worse than gesturing.

We have a HP touchsmart PC. We use it as a normal PC but every so often we put it in the bedroom and watch a movie or i-player and the touchscreen part is great. Just being able to move a screen is a big bonus. Really pleased with it for general PCing and internet etc. We don't use it for hours at a time and would get another, it just works. Dave!

The problem with win8 is that it's bloody difficult to make it work like win7 does.

Cheers guys Id not thought about the physical damage it would cause so thats a great point!! Erring on the side of 10gb + ram laptop if anyone has pointers? Barry - soundlink - great for parties and to take on holiday / listen to R6 in the bathroom as you just plonk it on the floor with an old mobile linked by blutooth for streaming radio - its fantastic. Quite bassy tho so need to filter the sounds through an eq.

Cheers, I'm just after something decent to stream mp3s and YT through when I'm on the phone/Nexus7 in the house/garage. They're a bit pricier than other brands but they don't seem to have the bass this does.

Really? If I press the windows key on my W8 machines it pretty much looks and works exactly like W7. If you think of the Metro tiled interface as a full-screen start button it makes more sense/easier to deal with the change.

Just get a 17" mahooosive laptop and you'll be fine. Something like an Acer V3-771G (make sure you get the one with full HD resolution) or Asus G75VW.

i7 17" MacBook Pro. Decent sound for a laptop too. They stopped making them now, though they turn up here or ebay etc. Great resolution and all the power you could want. Expensive, but it will have some residual value in a few years when you want to change it. Unlike anything running windows. And I mean anything. Everyone I know who has gone over to a Mac has wished they had done sooner. Life is too short to be reinstalling your virus prone computer every few months...
