WANTED: SUB £1K CAR
Previous | 123 | Next

My gf passed her test on Friday and needs something ASAP. She wants something to last a year or two so she can get past the "new driver scrapes" stage!

Criteria:

Up to about golf size.
Up to 1.7 (special dispensation for pumas, though smaller the better).
Manual gearbox.

Doesn't mind what body style though she doesn't really want a convertible.

Real cars/ads only!

I think that was an instruction, not a suggestion.

Buy me, remove stickers, sell wheels, use as a small load carrier

:D

More importantly, seems to be lacking major rust in the bad areas from the photos, they ride properly, handle sweetly, and will get no less than 30mpg no matter how much you mercilessly thrash it, which it doesn't really need as the engine has most of it's torque low down, which makes anything other than M-way driving nice and easy - around town they're a doddle, out on the sticks they're entertaining as you want.

Bit noisy at speed though with those blanking plates in the back

Bmw 316i compaq presario.

The best normal runabout car I've owned. Solid, well built, reliable, comfortable, practical and dirt cheap to run. Scrapyards and eBay are littered with secondhand parts.

Decent steering lock, and most have rear parking sensors which makes them very easy to manouver.

I'd happily have another.

Too many old sheds.

There must be a Puma to be had for a grand surely

and from the beginning think what may be the end.

I wouldn't bother with any from a dealer.

I'm looking upto £2k and it's painful.

looks good in the photos, I'm rapidly learning that "clean throughout" is dealer speak for "mostly fvcked, but looks ok from 10 yards away!"

I'm going to have to do another day of trawling about looking at that sort of one though.

A couple of weeks ago you'd have suggested an MG ZR Atomix - what happened?

exactly. It all seems so straightforward before you start looking at the sh!tters these dealers have the gaul to stand next to and declare "a good solid car" when they are fully aware it needs another £600 to bring it back up to even the basic level of safety. And by that time you've wasted several hours and a load of petrol to see it.
