So assuming we never see the Volvo again we will need to replace it. What with the sprogging I was planning on changing it for an estate anyway (although had hoped it could wait until the summer), so I will ask the forum for (duly ignored as per convention) advice on alternatives. Budget is £7k (possibly up towards eight if it is the right car) and requirements are: Wife says: estate, manual, rear parking sensors, not black. I say: more power, something more evo than the S40, not a bland econobox. Within a reasonable distance from S/SE London (as the hire car will have to go back as soon as the claim is settled we will struggle to get around). In a dream world: heated leather seats, RWD, foldable mirrors, bluetooth, climate control, decent stereo. Enlighten me! Virtual pints, revels and fivers to all.

It does seem rude not to consider an E39, but is there a massive difference in running costs between the 530 and 540? For a family wagon, I'd imagine a 530i would suffice in terms of grunt, not drink as much fuel, less tax presumably? Either that or an Octavia turbot wagon if you don't want the missus exposed to DANGEROUS RWD.

Forgot to add: less than five years old. Although a 540 would be lovely it will (until her ladyship goes on maternity) have to do around 500 miles a week, so can't drink like a fish.

Have been looking at 3 and 5-series ones. Looks like 55-07 plates are the most likely candidates.

Surely it'll have to be the forum standard 330 or 335 if budget allows.

You'll get a decent spec 3 touring for that.

Not RWD but 159 wagons are doable with most boxes ticked: clicky 1 clicky 2 or a fast Saab 9-5 Accord or Mazda6 would be worth a look too for a big, comfy estate with lots of toys in budget. Seat Exeo too if you fancy a previous-gen A4 but much better VFM.

Leftfield, non-Evo choice: Skoda Superb V6 3.6 4WD Estate.
Not sure these versions are in budget yet though, so maybe a 2WD diesel Or an E91.

Definitely interesting. Is it a manual? Will PM you if the Volvo remains lost.
