Took a couple of old tyres from my mum's yesterday as part of a tidy-up. Drove into her local dump on the way home and was advised "you are on your own with tyres". "What should I do with them then?". I asked. "No idea mate - we don't take them - that's all I can tell you". me - "Very helpful. Thanks for that". She doesn't live too far away from us, but is in a different authority, so I tried my local dump too. They wouldn't take them either and suggested I needed to take them to a scrappy (who would presumably charge me?) Sunday 5:30pm. Nearest scrappy was shut, but on the way home I remembered a local-ish kwik-thief used to pile the used tyres in an area outside. Took a run out and - they still do. Added to their pile slightly. WFT is that about then? When did "the dump" stop taking tyres? (Someone is going to tell me 10yrs ago or something aren't they)

I haven't been able to take tyres ever since I started driving, so at least 13 years now. Scrap yards have always just taken them though, no money changes hands, especially if there is a few mm of tread left. Dave!

I've never had to dispose of tyres - don't you chaps get new ones fitted when you remove the old ones?

The tip in Redditch claims to take tyres on the website, but the opening hours are wrong on there so it may be lying. How do you end up with tyres not on wheels anyway?

Around here folk just put them around speed cameras, and set fire to them.

They are only 17"s. I think you need 18"s for that.

There's only ever bloody unhelpful staff at any dump I've been to.. they make a good case for fly tipping. You can see the crestfallen look on their face when you don't have something they can quickly put on Ebay.

Never heard of a tip not taking tyres. There's very little most modern ones don't take tbh.

They're cutting back with this sort of thing, ours will only let you take 2 per day, don't take bagged asbestos, 1 dustbin full of hardcore rubble per day etc. It's worth just paying the couple of quid per tyre disposal fee when you have them changed. The tyre thing I can kind of understand, as there are only so many that can go for remoulding or to be shredded for playgrounds. But surely the hardcore is pretty useful stuff for all sorts of applications? Expensive to move around I guess is the answer. Jon

Most waste disposal authorities will have contracts in place to deal with any type of waste. Even if that just means a third party reprocessor taking the specialist stuff away.

I'd be wrapping them in bin liners and sneaking them into general waste. I see it as the tips responsibility to organise items and anything that doesn't have a designated bin goes into general.

And here in lies the bigger problem. Council creates a barrier to legally dispose of something, people stop trying and dump them, leaving Council having to clear them up anyway There aren't enough belms in the world for Councillors imo.

Given that they take most items, I'd expect them to be at least slightly clued up on who-takes-the-things-they-don't. Like the second guy was. Not like I turned up with some radioactive waste.

Would you honestly give a sh!t for being paid minimum wage to stand in the freezing cold and "organise" plebs trying to throw away their unwanted sh!te?

Yes. Paid minimum wage or not (and they probably aren't) - you manage people to a standard that you set. They don't measure up - they don't earn minimum wage with you any more. The guy I spoke to at my local dump was about 22, replied "yes sir" when I walked up behind him and said "excuse me", and gave me some actual advice. What I wanted to hear was "yes we can take them", but in the absence of that he did all he could imho.
