Agreed. Especially the coupe. Always liked the W124. Even my dad's tired 300D with 340k+ miles on the clock felt special.

That has been on car&classic for months now. I am genuinely surprised it was not sold 10x already.

That saloon is a cracking spec, lovely colour combination and the correct grill. Dave!

W124's rock. Bought a '95 E220 auto a year ago for £995, £40 valet and it came up like new. Love it, 800 miles in a day no problem!

I much prefer the aesthetics of the saloon over the coupe. Looks proportionally more "balanced" to me.

Both of those are seriously nice, especially the coupe which is in the most correct colour a car can be bought in. As I recall as well, aren't the coupe's with big engines in rather rare?

There is an E220 over here (the later facelift shape with the new grille) for not a lot of money, absolutely spanking condition. I am very tempted but are they actually as good as what people say? I like the look of them still but what is all the fuss? Surely the refinement and cabin noise isn't that great by modern standard?

If it is W124 built up to '96 yes, they are built to last. On standard size steel wheels they ride smooth with very low levels of wind and road noise up to 130mph. Interior is plain, functional and comfortable. Fit a new CD/Radio unit and speaker system and honestly, I'd rather run this than most of the overpriced recyclable shyte for everyday driving and keep something special in the garage or the money saved for hiring what you get an itch for. Can you post a link to the E220 for sale.

I bought my wife a 1988 300E - we loved it ... she used to pick it over the Boxster on a regular basis as she thought it was so wafty - I paid £1500 for it.

Shame we don't have it anymore - we gave it to her brother in London when we left - they cost a fortune over here. I (with some expert help) swapped the engine for a fresher one - mine had came from Hong Kong and the bottom end was getting a bit rattly - really easy car to work on!

Great condition, interior looks taxi spec so will last even longer than the standard cloth. They are excellent vehicles for everyday 'wafting' about, waft is exactly the word most folk use about mine, glides over all our rutted and potholed excuses for roads!
