SKODA AT SPEED WEEK 2011
Prev | 12345678 | Next

Now that we've had Dickies full run down in the mag (which was very good), coulde we (as promised ;)) please now have the trials and tribulations from the engineering side of what it took to get the car there? :)

Nordschleife - there's only two barriers to worry about - the ones on the left and the ones on the right!

Just in case anyone missed the full story on our engineering trials and tribulations:

Not seen the mag yet... hasn't made it out to my part of the World where the postman moves slower than the glacier.

Look fwd to seeing it though!
Cheers

Gutted for you. Obviously you need to do something about the suspension so that the transmission is not unloaded and then loaded up, when the wheels are skipping over the surface (what suspension do you run - could you run dual springs (relatively soft first rate and stiffer secondaries?).

As an example of shock-loads, I had similar issues with my 500bhp Sapphire on cold slicks, it would "tramp" and did this to the nose cone on the gearbox / prop from the shock-loading (it is good for in excess of 800bhp if it isn't subjected to these shock-loads) on an out-lap in second gear (trying to warm the slicks up ) :

It would also destroy the planet gears in the rear diff (breaking them into three pieces) under tramping. If it didn't "tramp", there were no issues.

I tore every tooth off a hardened 4th gear in the middle of the rev range... not really under much b-hooost either...

We can't do a lot about the shock loading, the nature of the track and the speed we're doing means that the course is pretty rough except on days 1 and 4 (when they move it to a fresh stretch of salt) and the car is basically flying over it, she just doesn't have the weight to hold the rear wheels on the ground I think.

So we're thinking of going radical... CVT with belt drive!
But, the project coffers are empty, had to pay to ship her home with the credit card otherwise she was stranded out West.

So might not be back in 2012... but we will be back.

Cheers

Could you not experiment with a bit of aero - perhaps write off to Racecar & Engineering magazine, as they do features on cars in the wind tunnel at MIRA, they might take an interest in the project that could lead to some sponsorship as well if it was featured. They may find you some down-force with minimal drag to help keep the wheels on the ground?

It's a nice idea... but JCB DieselMax was unable to use the tunnel because of it's length so I guess we'd struggle as well...

I think the easy route is some sort of cushioning drive... big chunks of rubber in there... we're looking at all options.
