One of my colleagues is worried that his girlfriend has recently befriended a Jehovah's witness. He goes to an Anglican church mainly because his mum is the vicar there, but he is FAR from being a Christian imo. However he really doesn't want his GF to get involved with JWs. Our other colleague is a devout born again and has, amongst other things, warned against JWs as the religion was "born out of Aryanism and so has racist under-tones" Check your facts please. JW is linked to Arianism, not Aryanism! I fvcking belm at one religion arguing against another It's like having a serious conversation on who would win a fight between Spiderman and Batman*
*Batman obviously

You have just correctly summed up ALL religious arguments in one sentence. Bravo

Erm Spiderman would?! Spiderman is a proper hero whereas Batman needs his stupid fighting gear to do anything. Or am getting mixed up with Iron man? Anyway Spiderman would win any day of the year

I've had this with a young lad at work recently, he's been getting frustrated with his "discussions" with one of the god squad at our place. I had to remind him that you can't argue with someone who's entire argument is based on pure faith, its a no win situation. He's not going to admit his version might have flaws as that would ruin the faith aspect! :belm:

There is a sliding scale of bonkersness wrt religion.
JW's are up there with Scientologists.

They believe that only 144,000 people can get to heaven. But they have 4.5 million members.
That's numberwang.

I'm not sticking up for them either.
Most of the New Testament was written a long time after the event, and a lot of the meaning has been lost in translation.
And The Book Of Revalations is just bonkers.

There's documented proof that the central character existed. But a lot of the stories were made up later. I'm not defending any of this, but I do think some mad stories are more bonkers than others.
I'd take Roman Mythology over Jehovas Witnessings.

I'm not religious, but I wouldn't rule out anything. I certainly wouldn't want to have to explain to Allah why it was I was setting fire to mosques or frequently scrawled pictures of the prophet mohammed on toilet doors.. Your link text I mean, god is a forgiving person, but he aint that generous. So if you dont want to end up like the countless millions who died a painful, horrible death, I suggest you pledge your alligiance to the all-seeing sky fairy, lest you face the wrath of God himself (whoever which one you wish).

Not if you're Jewish. An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.
Admittedly this is the same God as the forgiving Christian one, but I think they've agreed to disagree.

Was this document found in a hotel bedside drawer? All religion is the selling of a story that makes the sales-people rich, comfortable and powerful (usually funded by the fear of the followers). Just because the new ones have made the stories a bit more elaborate doesn't make them less rubbish.

My wife was brought up as a JW, but neither her or any of her family are JWs anymore. Basically, although they believe 144,000 will go to heaven (number taken from Revelation), they believe that the rest of them will be raised (if they're dead) and live on paradise on Earth for eternity.
I decided to read up on JWs and it's not that different from other forms of Christianity.

I [geekishly] watched Ch4's The Bible: A History series. It was very interesting and I laughed at the fact that the Jews and Muslims were essentially all desert tribes worshipping the same god, but who split and went their owns ways to form Judaism and Islam. It's a bit bonkers, but Jehovas Witness' was at least a noble attempt at studying the Christian Bible and translating it correctly. I think it's the distance they keep from mainstream society that is their downfall - it's natural for the rest of us to fear (dis-trust) what we don't understand.

Corrected. Religion is simply a way of enforcing rules of social conduct on a population which can't work it out for themselves. That's about it, really.
